Republican Liz Cheney supports Harris instead of “dangerous” Trump

Liz Cheney is the latest Republican to endorse Kamala Harris and warn of the “danger” posed by Donald Trump.

The former Wyoming congresswoman and House Republican leader said Wednesday she would turn her back on the Republican Party and vote for Ms. Harris in November.

In a speech to students in North Carolina, Ms. Cheney said she would not “write” any other Republican candidate on her ballot.

“I don’t think we have the luxury of entering the names of the candidates, especially in the swing states,” she said.

“As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought about this carefully, and because of the danger posed by Donald Trump, not only will I not vote for Donald Trump, I will vote for Kamala Harris.”

Mrs. Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is a conservative, supports gun ownership and opposes abortion.

“Republicans for Harris”

Her support for Ms Harris comes after a number of “Republicans for Harris” announced they would vote against their own party over Trump’s selection as the Republican nominee.

Last week, 238 former Republican staffers, including Mitt Romney, George W. Bush and John McCain, released a joint letter urging “moderate Republicans and conservative independents” to support Ms. Harris.

Five Republican politicians and their staff spoke out against Trump at the Democratic Party convention in Chicago last month and offered their support to the rival party.

They included Adam Kinzinger, the former Illinois congressman, and Olivia Troye, homeland security adviser to Trump’s Vice President Mike Pence.

Geoff Duncan, the former Republican lieutenant governor of Georgia, said: “To my Republican colleagues at home who want to refocus on policy, empathy and tone: You know what the right thing is. Now let’s have the courage to do it in November.”
