Removed Samsung phone feature ‘costs fans money every month’ as ’angry’ owners rage: ‘We shouldn’t have to pay for it’

The South Korean tech giant has removed an important feature from its phones in recent years – and owners of the device are not happy.

It used to be quite common for Samsung smartphones to have an SD card slot.

This allowed Samsung users to insert a microSD card and instantly expand their storage.

This means that even if the phone’s storage was full, there was an easy and inexpensive way to add free space.

However, Samsung did not include an SD card slot in its Galaxy S21 smartphone in 2021.

This was a big change from the Galaxy S20 handset, which had this feature.

Now Samsung owners say the change is costing them Money – and they want SD card slots back.

One angry fan wrote on Reddit’s Samsung forum: “I don’t like that Samsung removed the SD card and it’s stressing me out because I want to get a new phone soon.”

“I go to T-Mobile’s website to see what phones they have, but they don’t have any high-end or mid-range models. Models that support SD cards.

“I just don’t understand, this is really a downgrade. I use my SD card for offline pictures and videos which I’ve had since 2013 and I have Google Cloud storage for backups.

“What upsets me most is that by introducing this additional redundancy, they have removed something that gave me and many others peace of mind.

“I don’t mind paying $3 a month for 100GB of storage, but now I’m completely dependent on it.

“This also plays into the new subscription model that every company follows these days. You will own nothing and be happy.”

Another said, “We shouldn’t have to spend extra money on a $1,000 device to store our data. We should never rely on cloud storage.”

“We should never have lost a feature that was already on these ‘flagship’ phones. It’s a small change and it wouldn’t have hurt to still have it.”

And one added: “This is Samsung’s biggest disadvantage.”

Other users hit back, with one simply saying “deal with it” while another said “99% of the population doesn’t care.”

Another user suggested using a dongle to insert an SD card, noting, “Times have changed.”

The SD card slot isn’t the only feature Samsung has removed in recent years.

Samsung – a brief history

What you need to know…

  • Samsung is a large South Korean company that consists of many global companies
  • It is known locally as a “chaebol,” which means “business conglomerate.”
  • It was founded in 1938 by Lee Byung-chul as a trading company
  • But over the decades the business expanded to include food processing, insurance, textiles and retail.
  • It was not until the late 1960s that Samsung entered the electronics industry – for which the company is best known in the West today.
  • In the 1970s, the company also established companies in the construction and shipbuilding industries.
  • Today, Samsung’s main sources of income are its smartphones and computer chips
  • The company accounts for about a fifth of South Korea’s total exports and about 17% of the country’s GDP.
  • Samsung employs more than 270,000 people worldwide

Samsung phones now no longer have an IR blaster that allowed the handset to act as a remote control.

And modern Samsung phones – like the new Galaxy S24 – don’t have headphone jacks either.

However, this is not just a Samsung problem, as Apple’s latest iPhones also do not have an IR blaster, a headphone jack or an SD card slot.
