Reid Detmers impresses for the Angels in their win over the Minnesota Twins

Reid Detmers pitched six solid innings and Brandon Drury and Niko Kavadas hit home runs to lead the Angels to a 6-2 victory over the struggling Minnesota Twins on Monday night.

Detmers (4-6) got off to his second straight good start after spending three months at Triple-A Salt Lake. The 25-year-old left-hander allowed five hits and struck out eight batters — including the last three batters he faced — to earn his first win since April 12 against Boston after starting the season 3-0. He allowed three hits and struck out 10 batters in six innings in a no-decision against the Dodgers last Tuesday, in his first appearance since June 1 after being demoted to the minor leagues following months of inconsistency.

Drury hit his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the third inning, and Kavadas added another two-run home run, his third, in the sixth inning.

Kyle Farmer hit a home run for the Twins, who suffered 12 strikeouts and lost their fourth straight game. Minnesota has scored just 13 runs in six of its last seven games. The Twins are 6-15 in their last 21 games but remain in third place in the American League wild-card standings, three games ahead of the sidelined Detroit and Seattle.

David Festa (2-6) allowed a two-run single by Nolan Schanuel in the first inning and a 459-foot home run by Drury in the third inning to give the Angels a 4-0 lead. Festa was replaced after four innings.

Carlos Santana had an RBI single for Minnesota in the third inning and Farmer hit a home run in the fourth before Kavadas hit a home run to right field against Ronny Henriquez in the sixth inning to extend the Angels’ lead to 6-2.

José Suarez, recalled from Triple A on Monday, threw three hitless innings for his first career save. Since June 17, Angels relief pitchers lead the majors with a 2.62 ERA.

Injury Updates: Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon (back soreness) missed his second straight game as a precaution. He is expected to return Tuesday. … Outfielder Jo Adell (left oblique strain) was placed on the 60-day injured list.

Next: The Angels plan to use right-hander Griffin Canning (5-12, 5.02) in the second game of this three-game series on Tuesday. Right-hander Pablo López (14-8, 4.05) is the projected starter for Minnesota.
