A Reddit user blasted a wedding couple for their bizarre plan to hold their wedding reception in a nightclub.
User “OPMom21” vented his anger on the website’s wedding-shaming forum page.
“My husband has a friend who is getting married next year,” wrote OPMom21.
“He and his fiancée booked a fancy villa in an expensive area for the ceremony and dinner.”

However, since music is not allowed in the bar after 9 p.m., according to OPMom21, the couple asks their guests to leave the store and “go with them to a crowded nightclub in another part of town to dance and drink at their own expense.”
The Reddit author continued: “They call this plan their reception. The nightclub is one of those places with a high entrance fee where people line up to get in.”
OPMom21 called it “an incredibly stupid idea” and said she “couldn’t imagine the guests going along with it.”
“I thought I’d heard it all, but this is the icing on the cake,” she wrote.
Reddit user “UnsharpenedSwan” agreed, calling the plan “tasteless” and “absolutely bizarre.”
“Never underestimate the audacity of some people I guess,” added Reddit user “sass_and_grass.”

Another Reddit user also pointed out the strain this puts on the nightclub staff.
“Not informing the bar in advance is so brutal to the guests and bar staff,” wrote Reddit user “CricketExtreme.”
“A quick email or phone call would make all the difference.”
Diane Gottsman, etiquette expert and founder of the Protocol School of Texas in San Antonio, told Fox News Digital via email that there is “nothing wrong with the bride and groom saving money and having a smaller wedding.”
Gottsman said, “In this case, the bride and groom are essentially skipping the reception and asking their friends to go to a nightclub with them. This is not a reception – this is an after-party where the guests pay for themselves. If the guests go, that’s their decision.”
“If everyone agrees with the guidelines, there shouldn’t be a problem.”
Gottsman said it would be “better” for the bride and groom to have a small gathering after the ceremony, let people know where they will be later and “let the guests decide whether they want to attend, at their own expense.”
WEDDING TIME: Reddit user confronted by stepfather with ‘father of the bride’ insult
“When people just show up, without reservations and at their own expense, it’s more likely to be called a gathering of friends than a reception,” she said.
“If everyone agrees with the guidelines, there shouldn’t be a problem.”
The problem, Gottsman said, is that the bride and groom make it seem like it’s their wedding celebration rather than a pay-for-your-own event – “which admittedly annoys those who just spent money on a dress or suit, may have had to travel to get there, hired a babysitter and sent a gift from the registry for the newlyweds.”
Gottsman said, “A better option would have been a small, alcohol-free reception with cake, rather than calling ‘meeting at the bar’ a reception, because that’s not what it is. It’s a gathering of friends who still want to celebrate, but not under the guise of a reception.”

She added: “You’re standing in a bar with strangers, paying for your own drinks and hanging out with your friends.”
The bride and groom should not call the outing a “reception,” Gottsman stressed, and should not expect guests “to go out, stand in a long line and pay for their own ride.”
“They probably expect people to pay for it, which adds insult to injury,” she said.

As an alternative, Gottsman suggested that the couple could pay for the first two rounds and then have the guests pay for the remaining drinks.

Another option, Gottsman said, would be to offer guests appetizers and let them pay for their own drinks.
“It adds a little more festive touch and fits the wedding reception,” she said.
