Red Wings sign defender Moritz Seider for 7 years

The Detroit Red Wings signed their top defenseman Moritz Seider on Thursday to seven-year contracts worth nearly $60 million.

The average contract value is $8.55 million per year.

The Red Wings took the ice for the first time in training camp on Thursday without Seider, their No. 1 defenseman, but word soon spread that the restricted free agent had agreed to a contract.

The Detroit Free Press reported Thursday that the Red Wings had about $8.7 million left in cap space and that the team was able to fill that spot with Seider.

On Monday, general manager Steve Yzerman announced that a deal was imminent, according to the Free Press.

“I’m hopeful we can come to an agreement at some point — sooner rather than later would be better for both sides,” he said. “I don’t think we’re very far apart, but hopefully we can make progress to get him here as soon as possible.”

The 23-year-old Seider was selected sixth overall by the Red Wings in the 2019 NHL Draft. He has never missed a game in his three NHL seasons.

The German-born player scored nine goals and provided 33 assists last season. He has 134 points (21 goals, 113 assists) in 246 career games.

Seider won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie for the 2021–22 season.
