Red Sox expected to part ways with batter after 2024 season

The Boston Red Sox have just over 20 games left in their 2024 regular season and are more than five games out of the final wildcard spot in the American League.

Therefore, at this point in the season, the Red Sox should be thinking about their future beyond 2024, including what their roster should look like next year.

Some members of this year’s team will hit the market in the offseason, but Boston must decide who they want back.

One Red Sox soon-to-be-a-free-agent is outfielder Tyler O’Neill, who has been a solid performer for the team, posting a .255 batting average with an .862 OPS, 25 home runs, 50 RBIs and four stolen bases in 95 games despite missing a lot of time with injuries.

So what could happen this offseason?

Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report believes Boston will part ways with O’Neill after just one season.

Here’s what Reuters wrote about O’Neill’s free agency:

“The 29-year-old has only played over 100 games in a season once in his career and has battled a variety of injuries. In a market where hitters are scarce, he should have no problem at least keeping up with the five-year, $75 million contract that Andrew Benintendi got a few years ago.”

The Red Sox have more outfielders than spots in the outfield, as Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela and Roman Anthony may be on the field there.

There’s just no room for O’Neill, especially at this price, and they’ll honestly probably have to trade away one of the aforementioned four.
