Red Line operations will be partially suspended for one week starting Monday

Red Line service will be suspended in parts of Cambridge and Boston for a week starting Monday as the MBTA conducts track work and station maintenance, officials said.

From August 19 to 25, free shuttle buses will replace trains between JFK/UMass and Kendall/MIT stations.

The work is part of the MBTA’s ongoing track improvement program announced in November. Previously, train service between Alewife and Kendall/MIT stations was suspended from July 15 to July 26.

Shuttle buses will not stop at Downtown Crossing or Park Street, the MBTA said. Southbound riders can get off at the Otis and Summer Street shuttle stop, and northbound riders can get off at the Federal and Franklin Street stops. Shuttle buses will also stop at the State and Haymarket stops.

The MBTA encouraged riders to use the free commuter rail service between Braintree and South Station and between Porter and North Station. Accessible vans are also available for on-demand transportation.

“The MBTA understands how these service changes will impact riders’ daily trips during this time, but we are committed to improving your trips in the long term with more reliable, punctual and safer service,” MBTA officials said in a statement.

There will be further cancellations on the Red Line in September. From September 6 to 29, train service between JFK/UMass and Braintree will be suspended for further track work. Alternative service options are currently being worked out, the MBTA said.
