Recruiters believe remote work has improved the quality of applicants

MyPerfectResumea leading career and resume service, has released the results of its Survey on recruiting trends 2024, It examines the latest trends and issues facing the recruitment industry, including the impact of remote work on talent acquisition, the widespread use of ghost jobs, and the effectiveness of AI-based recruitment tools.

The survey of 753 recruiters in the US found that despite very high adoption rates (96%), only 35% of recruiters believe AI recruiting tools help them find the right candidates. The survey also found that a significant number (81%) of companies post fake jobs, a practice that can cause additional friction and frustration for job seekers because not every role they apply for is an open position.

“While AI has the potential to improve recruiting efforts, our survey shows that it is not quite the breakthrough we hoped for,” says Jasmine Escalera, career expert at MyPerfectResume. “In addition, the widespread use of ghost jobs significantly undermines the job search experience and creates distrust between companies and job seekers. Talent acquisition needs to approach the process with a human-centric approach and promote greater transparency and trust.”

Other highlights include the following:

  • Most (83%) recruiters believe that the increase in remote work opportunities has improved the quality of the applicant pool.
  • Fake job postings are widespread: 36% of recruiters say about a quarter of their job postings are bogus jobs, 22% say about half of all the ads they publish are fake, and 17% say up to 75% of the job postings they list are not jobs they are looking to fill.
  • Most (96%) recruiters use AI-based recruiting tools, but only 35% believe they effectively help them identify the right candidates.

Due to the extremely tight labor market, recruiters have faced many challenges during the pandemic. Despite the weakening labor market, recruiters are still struggling to find enough qualified candidates for their open positions. The survey shows that remote work opportunities help expand the applicant pool. In fact, most recruiters (83%) say they believe remote work has improved the quality of candidates they attract.

When asked how the ability to work remotely impacted their willingness to consider candidates from other geographic locations, 92% of recruiters said it increased their willingness.

Still, hiring locally is the overwhelming preference. When asked if they prefer local candidates over remote candidates, about half (49%) said they have a strong preference for local candidates, while 47% have some preference for local candidates.

Despite their preference for local employees, recruiters who responded to the survey were open to talent from other regions when asked if they would consider candidates who need to relocate. 73% of respondents said they would consider relocating and their employer offers relocation assistance. More than a quarter (26%) said they would consider hiring a non-local candidate but their employer does not offer relocation assistance.

“Overall, the survey uncovered some important issues and trends in today’s recruiting landscape,” says Escalera. “Most importantly, the ability to work remotely is a tool that helps recruiters attract higher quality candidates and meet their hiring needs. Conversely, we need to reevaluate the use of ghost jobs as a strategy and weigh the effectiveness and quality of AI recruiting tools before relying too heavily on their use.”
