Record heat on Sunday favors nighttime storms

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – We are in the middle of a hot and humid summer weekend that will bring severe storms.

There may be isolated thunderstorms until Saturday evening. Heavy rain, gusty winds and frequent lightning are dangerous.

Highs on Sunday will rise above 35 degrees – possibly reaching a record high of 37 degrees at NE International. A heat warning has already been issued, meaning the heat index should be above 46 degrees.

A few sudden thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon, but mainly late Sunday into Monday morning a storm complex will move in from the north. Some thunderstorms may be strong to severe, with gusty winds and frequent lightning.

You can be notified of severe storms while you sleep on Sunday night.

Some thunderstorms could persist until Monday morning. Isolated storms are possible until Monday afternoon.

By Tuesday, much drier air will move in, making the air feel more pleasant. We will enjoy lower humidity and cooler morning temperatures for a few days. In some places on the north coast, it could even cool down to 15 degrees.

The storms will return by the end of next week.

Tropics: Hurricane Ernesto made landfall in Bermuda at 4:30 a.m. this morning as a strong Category 1 hurricane. It will continue into the Atlantic Ocean and have some impacts along the coast of Newfoundland.

No further tropical development is expected over the next seven days.
