Reckless driving near Mesa Marin Sports Complex leads to arrest and 3 seizures

A suspect accused of reckless driving near the Mesa Marin Sports Complex was arrested Sunday after several recent reports surfaced of motorists in the area blocking access to residential areas.

Bakersfield Police said the BPD communications center received multiple calls regarding reckless driving in the area of the Mesa Marin Sports Complex (10315 Highway 178) on the evening of August 25.

Andy Reyes, 24, was arrested and taken to the Lerdo Jail on suspicion of reckless driving and tax evasion. In addition, eight citations were issued and three vehicles were seized.

Local residents also believed they heard gunshots in the area.

Officers attempted to stop another vehicle that was driving dangerously. Officers then pursued the driver.

Stop sticks, devices for deflating tires, were deployed near Hillcrest Cemetery, but the driver continued at high speed.

Officers concluded that the community would be exposed to an “unreasonable risk” in pursuing the suspect alleged to have committed the crimes. It was decided to discontinue the pursuit.

Residents are asked to call Bakersfield Police at (661) 327-7111 if similar incidents occur.
