“Reckless action.” Teenager shot in leg after argument between adults, police say

REDFORD TWP, Mich. (WXYZ) — A man is in custody after accidentally shooting a 13-year-old girl in Redford Township Tuesday night, police said.

Redford Township police said they were called to a home near Lexington and 8 Mile around 6:56 p.m. after shots were fired. When officers arrived, they reportedly learned the teen had been shot in the leg and was privately transported to a local hospital.

Police said they were able to locate the suspect, believed to be the teen’s stepfather, hiding in bushes less than two blocks from the crime scene and took him into custody.

According to Redford Township Police Chief Jennifer Mansfield, the initial dispute was believed to be a domestic dispute between the suspect and another adult. Police do not believe the man intended to shoot his stepdaughter.

“The reckless act of using a gun in the presence of children is obviously a dangerous problem in itself,” said Police Chief Mansfield.

A woman who lives on the streets told 7 News Detroit she was too afraid to show her face on camera and was awake all night after witnessing a shooting.

“A lot of arguing, a lot of excitement,” the woman described the events in the home beforehand.

She also tells us that the suspect is known for spending time with local children.

“I was heartbroken, my child was blown away … also because he really likes the guy,” said the neighbor. “Normally he builds mini bikes for the kids or pumps air into the tires, does things for them, the young people.”

Other neighbors, like Chester Emerson, tell me they haven’t seen violence here for decades.

“I hope this doesn’t change the makeup of the neighborhood, anything like that,” Emerson said.

The teenager is being treated for a non-life-threatening injury to her leg, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
