Rebecca Cheptegei: Ugandan Olympian dies after being set on fire by her boyfriend

CNN

Rebecca Cheptegei, a Ugandan marathon runner who competed in the Paris Olympics last month, has died days after her boyfriend burned her to death, the country’s athletics federation confirmed on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Thursday.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the death of our athlete Rebecca Cheptegei this morning, who was tragically the victim of domestic violence,” the Uganda Athletics Federation wrote. “As a federation, we condemn such acts and demand justice. May her soul rest in peace.”

Cheptegei, 33, who lived in Kenya, was in critical condition after suffering burns to 75 percent of her body following the attack at her home in western Trans Nzoia County on Sunday. Her death was also confirmed on X by the Kenyan Olympic team.

Trans Nzoia County Police Commissioner Jeremiah ole Kosiom said earlier this week that the sportswoman was doused with petrol by her boyfriend Dickson Ndiema, who entered her house with a petrol can and set her on fire after a dispute over land. Ndiema, who also suffered burns, is being treated at a hospital in the city of Eldoret.

A medical worker at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where Cheptegei was being treated, told CNN partner broadcaster Citizen TV on Thursday that she suffered multiple organ failure late Wednesday night.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
