Real Madrid draws against Mallorca in Mbappe’s league debut

Defending champions Real Madrid could only manage a 1-1 draw in Kylian Mbappé’s first Spanish league game in Mallorca.

In his second game for Madrid after his midweek debut, Mbappe failed to make a breakthrough on Sunday. The French international scored in Madrid’s 2-0 win over Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti started with the same team that had beaten Atalanta, with Rodrygo, Vinicius Junior and Mbappé in attack.

“They switch positions from time to time,” Ancelotti said of Vinicius and Mbappé. “Sometimes Mbappé plays more centrally and sometimes one of them has to occupy that flank, without a specific plan. It depends on how they feel about it.”

It was Rodrygo who gave Madrid the lead against Mallorca in the 13th minute, but the hosts equalised in the 53rd minute with a goal from Vedat Muriqi.

“We had a good start, took the lead and then had the chance to score the second goal,” said Ancelotti.

“We didn’t find the balance in the second half. We could have lost because there was no balance at the back. It wasn’t a good game. We need to defend better. We are a very offensive team, but defensive balance is a fundamental factor.”

Madrid defender Ferland Mendy was sent off deep into second-half stoppage time for a hard foul on Muriqi.

“I don’t want to make excuses for anything, but we just have to do better and improve our attitude,” said Ancelotti. “We can learn a lot from this game. It’s very clear where our problems could come from.”

Among the spectators at the match at the Son Moix stadium was Rafael Nadal, who comes from the island of Mallorca.

Mallorca’s players formed a guard of honour for the Super Cup winners and lined up to applaud the Madrid team as they entered the pitch before kick-off.

Real Sociedad, who finished sixth last season, lost 2-1 at home to Rayo Vallecano, who were battling relegation last season.

Jorge de Frutos and Sergio Camello scored in the second half to give Rayo the lead, while Sociedad only managed to score deep into injury time through Martín Zubimendi.

On Saturday, Robert Lewandowski scored two goals in coach Hansi Flick’s debut in the Spanish league, giving Barcelona a 2-1 win at Valencia.

Atletico Madrid visits Villarreal on Monday.
