Ravens and NFL fans are angry about a series of illegal formation calls in the opening game

The first half of the NFL season opener was laundry day.

The Ravens were assessed four illegal lineup penalties in the first half of their game against the defending champion Chiefs – a rematch of last season’s AFC title game – including three on the first drive.

Three of the four penalties affected left tackle Ronnie Stanley.

Ronnie Stanley received several penalties in the first half.
The referees called an invalid line-up several times in the first half.

The Ravens were penalized a total of seven times during the half.

“John Harbaugh has, uh, had enough,” said NBC live commentator Mike Tirico as the fourth illegal lineup penalty was assessed against the Ravens.

“It can’t be fun to be the referee making that call when Harbaugh is standing right next to it,” co-commentator Cris Collinsworth responded.

The NFL is placing increased emphasis on having linemen line up in the right formation at the start of this season, and the Ravens made some offseason personnel changes on the offensive line, including trading experienced Morgan Moses to the Jets.

Nevertheless, it was an aesthetically unpleasant football experience for the spectators and the fans cursed referee Shawn Hochuli.

“What does it mean for the game to call this illegal lineup? Where did it come from? Not the coaches. Not the players. Who?” wrote Thomas Casale, betting analyst at Sportsline, on X.

“Teams have been doing it the same way for 100 years. This is all nonsense. Just play bloody football.”
