RAPTERRA RISES: What to expect from Kings Dominion’s volcano replacement… and beyond

Deep in the dense and unexplored undergrowth of Jungle X, Rapterra rises, and the skyline of Kings Dominion may never be the same again… Here’s what you need to know to be ready to take to the skies on “The highest and longest launched wing coaster in the world.”

It all began in the ancient past… in this case in the time of the former headliner of Kings Dominion, VOLCANO – The Blast Coaster. As we explained in our detailed Lost Legends: This Intamin creation with the volcano feature was an attraction not soon forgotten – an ambitious, explosive, one-of-a-kind roller coaster that repurposed the park’s 47-meter-high, jagged peak (which had itself previously housed two dark rides and a spinning rotor) and wrapped it in a bright yellow track.

In an instant, Volcano accelerated levitating trains from 0 to 70 miles per hour and stormed through a solidhidden section of the track and then (incredibly) the start vertical from the fire-breathing mouth of the mountain that towers over the park’s Congo area. Volcano was a legend. But like many of Intamin’s Millennium installations, it was also reportedly an operational nightmare. Constant downtime plagued the complex, low-capacity attraction.

So it was not entirely surprising that just weeks into the 2018 Kings Dominion season, Volcano was closed – a common occurrence for the troubled attraction… Of course, fans was surprised when it remained closed for the entire summer season. Then, at the end of the summer, Kings Dominion admitted: after two decades of troubled operation, the iconic roller coaster would never return.

By the summer of 2019, Volcano had disappeared from the earth. But what emerged to the former roller coaster was a sight to behold. In 2022, Kings Dominion officially introduced a thematic relaunch of its jungle-themed zone and named it Jungle X-peditionWe’ve taken a deep dive into the vast, interconnected mythology that designers across the country have embedded in a special feature here.

By creating a new narrative that extended across the resort’s existing rides, restaurants and shops, Jungle X-pedition was a clever re-imagining. More specifically, we argued at the time that it was a perfect example of how regional, seasonal parks could achieve the immersive “living land” ethos usually reserved for destination parks.

When the show debuted in 2022, the host of Jungle X-pedition Tumbili – a tumbling, vertically stacked S&S Free Spin roller coaster modeled after an ancient primate temple. What Jungle X-pedition has clearly done not had a replacement for Volcano… still. Early viral marketing clearly and cleverly suggested that more discoveries were yet to come. And now the next one is waiting to be unearthed.

In addition to the already established trials of the Primate Temple (Tumbili), Spider Temple (Arachnidia Scrambler) and Snake Temple (Reptilian, the park’s historic bobsled track), 2025 will reveal at least one newly discovered site: the Temple of Rapterra – a long-lost jungle bird spirit. Do you have the courage to climb aboard, pass the trial and experience the power and speed of the mystical Rapterra? Read on as we explore this “spiritual sequel” to Volcano and what different awaits you in the jungle …
