  • The event was open to fans and was also streamed live online.
  • The deceased rapper was remembered with numerous musical tributes and memories from family members

Rich Homie Quan was buried with a ceremony worthy of a hip-hop king.

Family, friends and fans of the late rapper – who passed away on September 5 at the age of 34 – gathered at World Changers Church International in South Fulton, Georgia, on Tuesday, September 17, for a celebration of life in his honor. The event was open to fans and was also live-streamed online.

The star (born Dequantes Devontay Lamar) was remembered with numerous musical tributes, and family members such as his father Corey Lamar and siblings Andre Munford and Cekoya Munford also remembered, according to an obituary shared online by the family.

His estate also released an emotional song titled “Song Cry” just one day before the funeral.

“The first time I held you in my arms, my life changed in an instant,” Lamar wrote in a tribute published in the obituary. “It was then that I knew my life had a purpose… Thank you for being the most incredible human being, and most of all, thank God for allowing me to be your father. Until we meet again, rest in peace, son.”

Quan’s mother, Tammie Morgan-Chism, also sent her condolences, writing: “When man said I would never have children, God blessed me with you, and you have been the anchor of my life from beginning to end. God knows I am grateful for the 34 years God has allowed me to share you with the world. No more late nights and early morning conversations, but the presence of knowing you are my personal angel is good for my soul.”

In the obituary, Quan, a proud father of five children, was described as a “child prodigy” who had a pronounced talent and passion for both baseball and music.

“In his spare time, Quan could often be found in a batting cage, perfecting his swing. Over the years, he played every position on the field and gained a comprehensive understanding of the game,” the obituary said. “When he wasn’t on the field, Quan was either listening to music or making his own.”

It was also revealed that Quan had received a scholarship to Fort Valley State University, but instead chose to pursue his dream of becoming a musician, with his family building studios in their homes to support him.

After signing his first record deal in his early 20s, Quan became “known for his tireless work ethic” and formed a group with Mafio called the No Sleep Gang.

He released his mixtape Still there in 2012, and a remastered version included his first gold-certified hit, “Type of Way”.

He released the triple platinum hit “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” in 2015 and his debut album Rich as in spiritdebuted in the top 20 of Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart.

“Rich Homie Quan’s legacy of musical innovation is indelible,” the obituary said. “Since his debut, he has continually reshaped Atlanta’s legendary music scene and sound with his distinctive style, marked by unconventional beats and a captivating melodic lilt.”

Quan, father of sons Devin, Royal, Khosen and Loyal and daughter Alayna, will be buried at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta.

The cause of death is not yet known. According to an incident report obtained by PEOPLE, Quan’s brother told police he woke up at 3 a.m. on the day of his brother’s death and noticed the rapper sleeping on the floor next to the kitchen with food in his mouth, which he found “very unusual.” He then picked the star up from the floor and placed him on the couch.

A woman who lived in the house eventually called police at 11 a.m. that morning after noticing that Quan’s body was cold and he wasn’t breathing. She told officers she had seen him on the couch that morning but assumed he was sleeping, according to the report.
