Rangers vs. Mariners: Predictions, Tips, Odds – 9-14

Logan Gilbert is enjoying the best season of his career and the Mariners star has been dominant, especially at home. With Texas missing its best hitter, we’re betting the right-hander will shine in today’s divisional battle.

The Seattle Mariners are in the midst of a solid 6-4 run, and on Saturday night they will look to their ace Logan Gilbert to earn another win over a division opponent and move closer to the AL West leaders Houston Astros.

My predictions for the Rangers vs. Mariners game assume that Gilbert continues his home run against a Texans team without Corey Seager. Let’s take a closer look at this matchup with my MLB picks for September 14.

Prediction for Rangers vs. Mariners

My analysis

Logan Gilbert has done a remarkable job of limiting hits all season. The Seattle Mariners right-hander has been particularly successful on home soil, allowing four hits or fewer in 10 of 13 starts.

I expect the good times to continue against the Texas Rangers. They have lost three of their last four games and their slim playoff hopes have (almost) disappeared. FanGraphs gives them just a 0.1% chance of making the finals.

The Rangers have scored just 13 runs in their last four games (3.25 per game) and are clearly struggling to create a consistent offense without superstar Corey Seager. That’s not likely to change – especially now that their playoff hopes are over and the team is playing for nothing.

Gilbert has been consistently successful against this Rangers side, conceding three goals or less in four of five head-to-head meetings last season, all three of which came on home soil.

Marcus Semien, Josh Smith, Adolis Garcia, Josh Jung and Leody Tavares have averaged a combined 16 at-bats against Gilbert in their careers and posted a batting average of .200 or worse. They know what Gilbert can do and yet have struggled to do any damage.

Gilbert has an impressive .259 xwOBA over the last month, striking out over 34% of opposing batters during that span. The M’s top hitter is throwing very well, and I don’t think that will change against a Rangers team missing its best hitter and lacking motivation.

Logan Gilbert Less than 4.5 hits allowed

Logan Gilbert Less than 1.5 walks allowed

Luke Raley Over 0.5 hits

We’ll double-back Gilbert and also back him to limit walks against Texas, as the right-hander has walked fewer than two batters in 76% of his starts this season and 85% of the time when he played on home soil. His control is incredible; he hammers into the strike zone and wastes very few pitches.

Luke Raley is a priority target for me because of his attractive price tag of -125 to hit, especially in a matchup where the splits heavily favor him. Meanwhile, Max Scherzer has allowed a .258 batting average against lefties, which is much higher than his .217 average against righties.

Conversely, Raley is terrible against left-handed pitchers (.171 BA), but pretty good against right-handers like Scherzer (.257).
