Rangers rookie Wyatt Langford hits walk-off grand slam to beat Aaron Judge and the Yankees

Wyatt Langford saved the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night.

With the bases loaded and the count full in the bottom of the ninth inning, the rookie outfielder hit a ball into the second deck of left field for a walk-off grand slam that surprised the New York Yankees and gave the Rangers the 7-4 victory. Naturally, it sparked a celebration at Globe Life Field.

The home run, hit by closer Clay Holmes, was Langford’s 10th of the season and his second in as many days after hitting a two-run shot in Texas’ 8-4 loss to the Yankees on Monday. Langford entered Tuesday’s game with a .243 batting average. He now has 63 RBIs in addition to his 11 home runs.

The Yankees took a 4-1 lead on Tuesday night thanks in part to a two-RBI single by Anthony Volpe in the eighth inning. But Josh Jung — who hit a solo home run in the fourth — hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth before Nathaniel Lowe added another run on a sacrifice fly to center field, setting up Langford’s final home run that gave the Rangers a three-run victory.

After this win, their sixth in their last eight games, the Rangers are now 66-73. They remain third in the AL West and 8.5 games out of the final wild-card spot.

Although the score is still in the single digits, Yankees star Aaron Judge reached his longest home run-free streak of the season on Tuesday night.

Judge has gone eight games without a home run, doing so in April and July. That’s a long time for the MLB home run leader, who is trying to achieve another 60-home run season. Judge had one hit and scored one run in Tuesday’s loss. He struck out twice and flew out twice.

Judge entered this season with a .326 batting average and 51 home runs on Monday night. He hit both his 50th and 51st home runs on Aug. 25 against the Colorado Rockies, giving him his third career 50-home run season. Judge last had 50 home runs in a season in 2022, when he set the American League single-season home run record with 62. He won the AL MVP award that summer.

The Yankees fell to 80-59 on the season with the loss, their fifth in their last seven games, and are half a game behind the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East race.
