Rain probability increases rapidly ahead of the front, tropical threat

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – In drought-stricken East Tennessee (and to a much lesser extent Southeast Kentucky), we desperately need some rain. The rain will not only refresh our fall colors later, but also our brown lawns in the short term. We have a WVLT First Alert Weather Day on Wednesday, with puddles forming on the roads through the afternoon.

TONIGHT: Isolated showers or thunderstorms. Otherwise partly cloudy. Lows between 18 and 21 degrees. Light wind.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy at first, increasing clouds in the afternoon with isolated thunderstorms, especially near the Cumberland Plateau in southeastern Kentucky. Highs will be around 90 degrees. Winds will be southwest at 5-15 mph.

FIRST WEATHER WARNING DAY WEDNESDAY: Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the morning will spread in the afternoon. It could be heavy at times and cause water to pool on the roads, especially on the way home from work in some areas. Maximum temperatures will only be between 21 and 25 degrees, thanks to the clouds and rain.

TROPICAL RAINBANDS LATE IN THE WEEK

THURSDAY: Clouds will give way to rain bands from the remnants of the tropical system late afternoon into Thursday night. If the current track stays in place, it will pass directly over eastern Tennessee. The timing for the heaviest rain looks to be Thursday night into Friday morning. Winds will pick up Thursday night.

FRIDAY: The morning rain is easing, maximum temperatures are still above 20 degrees. It will remain windy at times.

WEEKEND: Saturday is a MAJOR time for weddings and outdoor events, as the UT football team has its first week off. Temperatures are expected to be pleasant, with some lingering clouds and perhaps a passing shower. Sunday also looks mostly dry, with highs in the 80s.
