RACING AND COCONUT TREES

Today, on the final day of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, seems an appropriate moment to remember that ALL HUMAN EVENTS – not just the individual people who take part in them – do not simply “fall from a coconut tree…”.

One can also say that all human events “… exist in the context of everything in which they live and what was before…”

RACE, the inspiring 2016 film, shot for the 80th anniversary of the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin,

… goes far beyond the usual sports biopic with its retelling of Jesse Owens’ extraordinary story…

…of the evils of Hitler and the Nazis,

– And the history of racism and anti-Semitism in our own country …

…but also of the courage of those who (each in their own – sometimes morally questionable or flawed – way) ultimately stood up against this evil…

…the context in which both Owens and these Olympic Games took place.

For that reason alone, it would be worth watching.

Because it is a powerful representation of the CONTEXT OF OUR OWN LIVES AND TIME – exemplified by the current Games in Paris …

Reminds us of the CONTEXT

THE PROFOUND DECISIONS WE HAVE TO FACE.

RACE is available on NETFLIX.

(Note: “Race: History vs. Hollywood” on the website HISTORYvsHOLLYWOOD.COMdoes an excellent job of researching the film’s historical accuracy – it turns out that the film is an extraordinarily faithful retelling of history in virtually all essential respects.)
