Quinn Ewers injured. Arch Manning joins Texas game against Texas-San Antonio

play

No. 3 Texas lost its starting quarterback Quinn Ewers early in the game against Texas-San Antonio.

With the Longhorns leading 14-0 with 12:19 left in the second quarter, Ewers began limping off the field after a handoff before falling to his knees and play was suspended. Arch Manning, a redshirt freshman, has taken Ewers’ place in the Texas huddle.

On his first play, Manning faked a handoff and threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Moore Jr. that gave Texas a 21-0 lead. On his second possession, Manning ran 67 yards to give the Longhorns a 28-7 lead before halftime.

After Manning’s touchdown run, Ewers left the field with a towel over his head and went to the Texas locker room. Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian said on the ESPN broadcast that Ewers had a strained stomach and would not return.

Ewers entered the game as one of the Heisman favorites after leading Texas past Michigan last week. He had thrown for 506 yards and six touchdowns in the first two games, then added two more touchdown passes before leaving the game on Saturday.

This is the second appearance of the season for Manning, who was signed as a five-star recruit in the 2023 recruiting cycle. Manning played in the second half of the game against Colorado State on August 31 and scored two touchdowns in that 52-0 victory.
