Public Works Authority carries out road works on Vasco Road

Brentwood, Calif. – The Contra Costa County Public Works Department will remove debris and replace delineators to improve safety on Vasco Road.

The work will take place between Camino Diablo and the Alameda County Line on Wednesday, 4 September 2024, and Thursday, 5 September 2024, barring unforeseen circumstances. Work will be carried out between 9:00am and 3:30pm, weather permitting. Work will be scheduled to minimise impact on commuter traffic.

One week before the scheduled work begins, noticeboards will be put up to inform drivers. An escort vehicle will direct traffic through the work area. Drivers should expect delays of 20 to 30 minutes and are asked to use alternative routes.

    • The Vasco Road Safety Improvements Project was completed in 2012 and included the construction of a concrete median barrier, retaining walls, bridge widening, and other improvements. The Vasco Road Safety Improvements Project is an extension of Phase 1 and requires additional funding for completion. To date, $15 million in Regional Measure 3 (RM3) funds have been allocated to this project, but this is only about half of the amount needed to construct Phase 2. Contra Costa County Public Works submitted a grant request for additional funds to advance the Vasco Road Safety Improvements Phase 2 Project on June 16, 2023. • In early 2023, Contra Costa County received Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) grants for the Vasco Road Safety Improvements Project from Walnut Blvd to Camino Diablo. This project will construct no-passing zones, medians, centerline rumble strips, and delineator posts and is scheduled to be completed by 2025.
    • The intersection of Vasco Road and Camino Diablo has seen several recent improvements, but more improvements are planned and included as Project #8 in Contra Costa County’s Vision Zero Action Plan, which can be viewed at the following link: contracosta.ca.gov/VisionZeroThe Building Department is currently reviewing the scope of the project and is actively seeking grant funding.
    • The existing centerline delineator posts on Vasco Road were repaired and replaced by our maintenance crews in November 2022 to increase safety on this busy commuter corridor. Another round of work is planned for August 2023.
    • The Contra Costa County Department of Transportation reviews accident reports (prepared by CHP) to look for patterns or clusters of similar accidents and to identify countermeasures that could be implemented to reduce or prevent these types of accidents.
