Public service campaign criticizes Kamala Harris’ electric vehicle agenda

(The Center Square) – Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s ambitious goal is to have one million electric vehicles on Illinois’ roads in less than six years, and now a nonprofit campaign is criticizing his political party’s electric vehicle agenda.

The American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) has launched an ad campaign called “Driver’s Seat” highlighting Vice President Kamala Harris’ support for a complete ban on the sale of new gasoline cars in the U.S. The campaign is part of AFPM’s eight-figure campaign effort to educate Americans and give consumers the opportunity to communicate their opposition to gasoline car bans and electric vehicle regulations directly to their elected officials and politicians.

“Americans have a right to know exactly where the Vice President stands and whether the Harris administration will correct or toughen policies like the EPA order that will effectively ban most new gasoline cars by 2032,” said Chet Thompson, CEO of AFPM. “In the meantime, Congress must act quickly to repeal this EPA order and protect consumer choice.”

The Illinois Corn Growers Association has joined with the AFPM and a coalition of agricultural and oil industry representatives to sue the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over what they say is an unfair and costly electrification of America’s trucking fleet. The suit argues that the astronomical costs of the rule require approval by Congress.

Dave Loos, director of biofuels and research at Illinois Corn Growers, said another requirement that up to 56 percent of all cars sold between 2030 and 2032 be electric is unrealistic.

“This is very, very concerning for us as producers. But it is also concerning because, first of all, we are losing those bushels, secondly, we are losing demand for ethanol and thirdly, it really takes away options for consumers,” Loos said.

Illinois offers incentives for electric vehicle companies to move to or expand in the state. Joliet-based electric bus maker Lion Electric, which received nearly $50 million in incentives from the state of Illinois, recently laid off hundreds of employees.

According to the Illinois Department of State, there are just over 111,000 electric vehicles registered in Illinois.
