Public hearings on budget and tax rates for city and county are imminent

The City of Graham and Young County will hold public hearings on the budget and tax rate this month and next.

The City of Graham will hold two public hearings on Thursday, August 15th at 8:30 a.m. in the Council Chambers of City Hall, 608 Elm Street. The hearings will address the proposed budget, increases in sewer connection fees, water withdrawal fees, and sewer and water utility fees.

On Thursday, July 18, the Graham City Council approved a budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year that recommends increases in property taxes, water and sewer fees.

The budget proposal includes a recommendation to increase the property tax rate from the current $0.635 per $100 of value to $0.665 per $100 of value, an increase of 4.72%.

There will also be a separate public hearing on the property tax increase at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 9, at the same location in the council chamber, in which the public can participate.

Young County is preparing for public hearings on its proposed budget and tax rate for 2024-2025. The proposed tax rate for the county is an increase of just over four cents over the current rate of $0.587674 per $100.

The public hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Monday, August 26, in the Young County Commissioners Court Chambers at the Young County Courthouse, 516 Fourth St., Room 106.

Young County Commissioners recently discussed the proposed tax rate that will take effect in the 2024-2025 fiscal year. The proposed tax rate is $0.63 per $100 of value.
