Prosecutor: 16-year-old robs gas station in Bergen County near Route 4

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A 16-year-old Bergen County resident has been charged with robbing an area gas station around 4:45 a.m. earlier this month, prosecutors announced Friday.

The teenager was charged with armed robbery, weapons offenses and theft, the Bergen County District Attorney’s Office said.

The District Attorney’s Office said officers with the River Edge Police Department responded to an armed robbery at a gas station on Hackensack Avenue in River Edge on Wednesday, August 7, 2024.

Investigators found that the suspect, wearing a mask and hoodie, “walked toward the gas station attendant and displayed a handgun that was tucked into the waistband of his pants.”

The teenager demanded money that was in the cash register and on the victim. He fled with several hundred dollars, prosecutors said.

On Thursday, August 8, 2024, detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigations Unit and the River Edge Police Department “located the juvenile in Bergen County, took him into custody, and executed a court-ordered search warrant at his residence,” prosecutors said.

The specific charges were first-degree armed robbery, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree theft.

The teenager was remanded to the custody of the Bergen County Juvenile Detention Center to await further action by the Family Law Division of Bergen County Superior Court, prosecutors said.
