Promoting gender equality in and through sport: the European Sports Charter and the Olympic Charter

The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be the first Games in history to achieve gender parity among athletes. However, there is still a long way to go before comprehensive parity is achieved at all levels and in all aspects of sport. Promoting greater gender equality in and through sport is a fundamental objective of both the Council of Europe’s European Sports Charter and the Olympic Charter.

The European Sports Charter (Article 6) states: “The approach to human rights due diligence (…) should (…) promote gender equality in and through sportin particular through the implementation of the strategy of Gender mainstreaming in sports.”

The Olympic Charter (Article 2) affirms that “The role of the IOC is to (…) to promote and support the advancement of women in sport at all levels and in all structures with the aim of implementing the principle of equality between men and women.”

On the occasion of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) is dedicating a series to the shared values of the European Sports Charter and the Olympic Charter. Each week until the end of the Games, we will focus on one aspect of these values. Follow @CoE_Sports in X to find out more!
