Princess Martha Louise and Shaman Durek speak out before the wedding

Princess Märtha Louise of Norway and shaman Durek Verrett are feeling happily in love ahead of their wedding later this month.

The only daughter of King Harald and Queen Sonja will marry the American shaman in front of members of the Norwegian royal family and other celebrities in her native Norway on August 31. In a recent episode of their podcast, the couple spoke about their bond. HeartSmart Conversations.

“I love Durek’s wisdom, his humor and his depth and that we can talk about any topic under the sun and that he always sees me and always wants to develop. That’s what I love about you,” Princess Märtha Louise said in the August 14 episode of the show.

“Of course, he’s also very handsome,” she added, which made Durek and one of her co-hosts, Mari Manzetti, laugh.

When it was his turn to answer the question, Durek praised his fiancée’s “beautiful” soul and her warm nature as a mother. Princess Märtha Louise is the mother of three daughters, Maud Angelica, 21, Leah Isadora, 19, and Emma Tallulah, 15, whom she has with her late ex-husband Ari Behn.

“What I love about Märtha is her wonderful soul,” said Durek. “She has such a pure heart. She loves her children, she loves her family, she loves people. I love how open she is to new ideas. It’s so beautiful that she can really encourage the people around her.”

He continued: “When you see the kind of mother she is and the way she treats her children, the amount of love she gives them and the amount of space she gives them so that they can be so successful in what they do, it just speaks for itself.”

Durek also said he appreciated how Märtha Louise challenged him and celebrated her spirit and personality.

“I love it when she challenges me, I love it when she makes faces, I love it when she… just is herself,” he said. “I just love her and everything that she is. The air that she breathes. It’s just beautiful.”

Märtha Louise and Durek announced their engagement in June 2022 after about three years of dating and announced in September 2023 that they would marry on August 31, 2024 in picturesque Geiranger. Hello! reported that the celebration will begin with a welcome party on August 29, followed by a boat ride and a Latin-style party on August 30 before the wedding ceremony at Hotel Union on Saturday.

Shortly after Durek proposed at an equestrian estate in his home state of California, Märtha Louise told PEOPLE that it “meant the world” to her that he designed her an emerald engagement ring with three diamonds on each side as a tribute to their three children.

Princess Märtha Louise had her daughters during her marriage to Behn, an author and playwright. They separated in 2016 after 14 years of marriage and their divorce was finalized the following year. In 2019, Behn committed suicide at the age of 47 and Princess Märtha Louise spoke openly about her depression following the death of her ex.

When Märtha Louise made her relationship with Durek official on Instagram, she referred to him as her “twin flame.” Durek’s website describes him as a “6th generation shaman” whose “teachings have influenced thousands,” including Gwyneth Paltrow, Nina Dobrev, and others.

The Norwegian Royal House sent its congratulations on behalf of the royal couple when Princess Märtha Louise and Durek announced their wedding date, and Hello! reported that the wedding will be attended by “a large number of Norwegian and foreign members of the royal family.”

In November 2022, Princess Märtha Louise stepped down from her royal role. The Norwegian royal family said the decision was made so that Märtha Louise could more freely pursue other interests without the restrictions of being part of the crown. The queen will retain her title as princess and will continue to be welcome at family events, the statement said.

“The King and Queen wish to thank Princess Märtha Louise for the important work she has done in her official capacity over several decades. She has carried out her duties with warmth, care and deep commitment,” courtiers wrote on behalf of King Harald and Queen Sonja, both 87.

Princess Märtha Louise’s move had no impact on the Norwegian line of succession, as absolute primogeniture, the right to rule regardless of gender, was not enshrined in the constitution until 1990. King Harald is followed in the line of succession by his son, Crown Prince Haakon, and his granddaughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 20, who is the first-born child of Crown Prince Haakon and his wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit.
