Prince’s Trust and Sectra launch initiative to promote young people’s careers in technology

The Prince’s Trust has partnered with medical imaging IT and cybersecurity company Sectra to launch a new initiative to help young people from diverse backgrounds access careers in technology.

The programme, called ‘Entering IT and Management’, was launched in Belfast over the summer and aims to provide underrepresented groups with a clear pathway into the technology sector.

This digital and technology-focused employment programme has already supported its first cohort, giving participants a real-world insight into the healthcare technology industry. The initiative offers practical support, including CV writing assistance, technical training and insight into industry opportunities, and direct career pathways, such as an apprenticeship with Sectra, for successful participants.

Yousif, one of the first participants in the program, shared his experience: “The hands-on experience and exposure to real-world challenges showed me how impactful and rewarding a career in this field can be. The team at Sectra were incredibly knowledgeable and supportive, and it was inspiring to see how they use technology to make a difference in the world.”

Other young people who took part in the programme reported gaining confidence, developing practical skills and creating networking opportunities that will benefit their future careers. Lauren, another participant, said: “This experience has really made me curious about all the future prospects in technology. If you get the chance to take part in a programme, I would say take it. It will give you new experiences and allow you to meet new people.”

Over the past two years, The Prince’s Trust has helped more than 2,000 young people participate in digital and technology employment programs. Despite this success, The Trust recognizes that inequalities persist and is committed to reaching more disadvantaged populations. The partnership with Sectra is seen as an essential part of this mission.

Julia Beaumont, Chief Technology Officer at The Prince’s Trust, emphasised the importance of such collaborations: “Through our partnership with Sectra, we can challenge existing perceptions and inspire young people from all walks of life to consider careers in digital and technology, regardless of the obstacles that stand in their way. It is vital that governments, businesses and charities work together to provide young people with professional development, career opportunities and the technical skills that are essential in today’s job market.”

Jane Rendall, Managing Director of Sectra in the UK and Ireland, echoed this sentiment: “We were very impressed by the energy and enthusiasm of those taking part in our initiative with The Prince’s Trust. Healthcare technology companies have an opportunity and a responsibility to encourage diversity in their workforce by recruiting from the communities they are privileged to serve. This programme is an example of this idea in practice and a fantastic opportunity to help more young people realise their potential in a sector that touches the lives of so many people.”

This partnership between The Prince’s Trust and Sectra is an important step towards creating wider opportunities in the technology industry, giving young people the skills and confidence they need to succeed in today’s digital world.
