Cat Glover, the singer, dancer and choreographer who worked with Prince during his heyday in the late 1980s, has died. She was 60 years old.

Glover’s death was announced on her official Facebook page. “It is with great sadness that we officially announce the passing of Catherine Vernice Glover – aka ‘Cat’. Please allow her children, family and friends privacy during this difficult time,” the brief statement said. The cause of death was not given.

Glover is inextricably linked to Prince and collaborated with the late artist on a number of projects, including the albums Signs of the times And Lovesexy and its accompanying music videos, concert films and tours. She also wrote the rap for Prince’s single “Alphabet St.”

She was born Catherine Vernice Glover on July 23, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois. Glover was one of six children and attended Esmond Elementary and Morgan Park High School. She began dancing at the age of five and it quickly became a lifelong passion. Prince also became her passion and Glover made it her life’s goal to meet the singer.

“I first heard of Prince after his album, Dirty Mind. I lived alone on the north side of Chicago,” Glover told Cruisers of Chicago. “The only thing that helped me through my depression was listening to Prince’s album, Dirty Mind. I knew I had to meet him. That was my conversation with my inner self.”

Hoping to attract Prince’s attention, Glover got her big break as a dancer on the talent show Star Searchwhich was hosted by Ed McMahon at the time. Glover performed as part of a dance duo called Pat and Cat with Patrick Allen and impressed the audience with his rapid moves. Pat and Cat won seven out of eight times at Star Searchwith two perfect scores, but lost the final and the $100,000 prize money.

Your success on Star Search Glover’s reputation as a dancer grew and David Bowie offered her a job. But it was her hero Prince who also wanted to work with her and she joined his band in December 1986.

With Prince’s guidance and help, Glover reached the pinnacle of her dance career. She choreographed and performed with Prince in the 1987 concert film Signs of the timesbased on the album of the same name. She performed as a dancer and background singer on the Lovesexy Tour in 1988 and also provided the rap for the album’s hit single “Alphabet St.”

In 1989, she left Prince’s band and started her own business. Glover released the EP Catwoman It remained her only music release in the same year.

In her later years, Glover worked extensively as a dancer and choreographer. In 1994, she had a brief reunion with Prince. The Black AlbumGlover contributed the rap to the song “Cindy C.”
