Presidents Cup 2024: The United States takes victory again as Bradley takes the winning point

The United States won another Presidents Cup, throttling a feisty but overwhelmed international team to continue its remarkable two-decade streak of dominance. The United States has now won the Presidents Cup 13 of the 15 times the event has been played.

Xander Schauffele set the pace early Sunday by completely dominating former world No. 1 Jason Day in singles 4 and 3 at the Royal Montreal Golf Club. A few games later, Keegan Bradley, the captain of the 2025 US Ryder Cup team, outlasted Si Woo Kim to grab the winning point.

The United States entered the day with an 11-7 lead, thanks to a five-game sweep on Thursday and two 3-1 victories on Saturday. Needing four and a half points to win the 2024 Cup, the Americans began dismantling the international team from the first game.

Day took an early 1UP lead over Schauffele, but the two-time major winner fought back, tying the game on the fourth hole, then winning the next five holes in a row to take a 5UP lead at the turn. After some back and forth on the back nine, Schauffele won the match on the 15th hole. He finished the week with a record of 4-1-0 and scored four points for the U.S. team.

Sam Burns and Tom Kim drew, giving each team half a point. Hideki Matsuyama delivered a blow to the Internationals, winning 1UP over world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. International team Corey Conners defeated Tony Finau 5&3. But Team USA’s Russell Henley took home a 3-2 victory over Sungjae Im, and Patrick Cantlay’s 3-1 win over Taylor Pendrith brought the United States within a single point of victory.

To do justice to the game, Bradley took the decisive point over Si Woo Kim and won 1UP on the 18th hole. Bradley, who has openly expressed his preference for team games, was notoriously left out of the Ryder Cup squad last year but was later named Ryder Cup captain for next year. He has enjoyed a career resurgence in recent years and performed so well on the field that he was named to Jim Furyk’s squad for the American Presidents Cup this year.

Entering this year’s competition, the United States had won 12 of the 14 competitions, with the 1998 Internationals winning one. In 2003 the teams were tied. Given the United States’ overwhelming advantage, the future of this event should be discussed, but for now, United States rule appears to be assured for at least another two years. The next Presidents Cup will be held at Medinah Golf Club in 2026.
