The United States holds an early lead over the international team after the first day of the Presidents Cup at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec.

After the five games concluded on Thursday, Team USA had a commanding 5-0 lead and was looking to collect the 15 points needed to win. It was the fifth time in the event’s history that a team won a round and the first time since 2007.

The U.S. group is trying to secure its 10th straight Presidents Cup victory by taking on a team made up of golfers from Africa, Asia, Canada and Mexico.

After Team USA earned a 17.5-12.5 victory at the 2022 Presidents Cup, captain Jim Furyk’s squad is already off to a good start.

After a series of five four-a-side games on Thursday, five four-a-side games with an alternative shot format will take place on Friday.

1:47 p.m.: Wyndham Clark/Tony Finau vs. Corey Conners/Mackenzie Hughes

2:01 p.m.: Scottie Scheffler/Russell Henley vs. Si Woo Kim/Byeong Hun An

They will try to defeat Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im, with Matsuyama scoring a hit victory at the Genesis Invitational on February 18th.

Meanwhile, the pairings of Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley and Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala continue after the duos picked up victories earlier in the event. However, the international team will include five new groups of two on Friday.

After a strong start on Thursday, it’s hard to imagine the United States losing the tournament for the first time since 1998. The US squad features four of the top six players in the world golf rankings, including No. 1 Scheffler and No. 1 Schauffele. 2.

While the top two golfers likely won’t come together as Furyk’s team looks to rack up as many points as possible, they should still lead the United States’ quest to further improve its record of 12-1-1 at the Presidents Cup.

After an impressive first day, we can expect the US team to claim their 13th victory by the end of the weekend.
