Prescribed burn in the Jemez Mountains spreads smoke to surrounding areas

A prescribed burn in the Jemez area triggered an air quality warning for parts of New Mexico Friday morning. They burned 700 hectares of land on Thursday and have to burn about 1,000 hectares more in the next few days.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Expect to see more smoke rising from the Jemez Mountains as crews work on the North Joaquin Prescribed Fire project.

That smoke entered the Albuquerque metro on Friday morning, likely causing you to cough or clear your throat, and officials issued an air quality alert until 11 a.m

Santa Fe National Forest crews burned about 700 acres Thursday in an area about six miles west of Jemez Springs and three miles south of the Rancho de Chaparral Boy Scout camp.

There are still around 1,000 hectares available for burning. Crews will continue to burn throughout Saturday and then begin securing and maintaining the fire within the lines.

In the meantime, forest roads in the area will be temporarily closed. They expect the project to take five days.
