The series premiere of the CBS reboot of Matlock contained a surprising twist, Kathy Bates‘ character – but what further impact will this have?
During the preview of the series, which aired on Sunday, September 22, Bates’ character Madeline “Matty” Matlock was revealed to be a former lawyer with the same last name as the iconic Matlock Series from the 80s. Matty tried to get a job at a prestigious law firm after her husband cheated on her and died, leaving her to care for her grandson alone.
Warning: Below you will find spoilers for the series premiere of Matlock.
However, in the final minutes of the premiere, it became clear that Matty had concealed her identity (her name is actually Madeline Kingston) in order to get a job at the law firm that she believes is responsible for her daughter’s death. Leah Lewiswho plays Sarah in the upcoming CBS series, collapsed and We weekly what the big reveal means for the rest of the season.
“I would love it if Sarah could expose Maddie. Because I think of all the people snooping around, she would be the one,” Lewis teased in an exclusive interview with Us“It’s so funny because Sarah always says what nobody wants to say.”
Sarah is thrilled when Matty is hired to work on Olympia’s (Skye P. Marshall) Team.
“She’s struggling a little bit with the age difference and thinking, ‘OK, who is this older person who’s just doing all the tasks that Sarah’s worked her whole life to do?’ So she’s kind of getting that attitude towards her,” Lewis explained. “But if Sarah said something, people would probably think she was just being ambitious and anxious.”
Lewis doesn’t think anyone would believe Sarah if she found out the truth about Matty. He adds, “If Sarah said, ‘Hey, look at all this information,’ they would just say, ‘Oh, that’s Sarah being Sarah again.’ She overanalyzes everything and that’s part of why she feels different at work.”
Although Matty keeps this big secret from everyone, her friendships with Sarah, Billy (David Del Rio) and the others will delve deeper.
“When Matty comes into the office, (Sarah) meets someone who is oddly patient with her behavior,” Lewis noted. “But (Matty) also has a really loving way of teaching her a lesson and calling her out, so to speak. When Matty comes into this office and starts talking to people, it really throws people for a loop. Because (people like Sarah) have never really dealt with anyone who is so understanding. She’s a whiz and can keep up with the pace — but she’s someone who brings out the best in them before they even realize it.”
Lewis had many scenes with Bates on Matlockwhich was an honor for her. “When (Kathy) arrives and the way she devours a script before she even gets on set – she’s a walking cinematic Hollywood documentary,” she gushed. “I think to myself, ‘Wow, everything you do is so present and so intentional.’ She could be so tender and yet so sharp (as her character) at the same time. Just being able to work with her makes my job so incredibly easy.”
While Matlock finds its audience on CBS, Lewis is excited to see what’s next for Sarah.
“Sarah is a lone wolf. Later she realizes that wolves don’t work alone – they need to be in a pack to thrive,” she teased Us“You can see it in all aspects of her life. She’s learning a lot about what it really means to be human. There’s not just one way.”
New episodes of Matlock airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET beginning October 17 during CBS’s official premiere week.
