Southampton manager Russell Martin speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “At any level you can’t react to a setback. We were brilliant up to that point, then we missed the penalty and that changes the atmosphere, changes the dynamic a little bit.

“But defending set pieces like that has nothing to do with Premier League talent, it’s not proper defending. It’s a question of mentality. I’m sure people will point out that this is the Premier League and we’ll be punished for it, but we need to defend better at every level we play at.”

On the second half: “It’s difficult because they do things when it’s 2-0 that they don’t do when it’s 0-0, when there’s a certain tension in their game because of the problems we’ve caused them.

“But we were still in the game. The longer it went on, the more I think we got into the game. If we send a man off, it’s almost impossible to recover. Then it’s about avoiding too much damage.”

On the need to understand the first point: “Then everyone relaxes. I feel like we’re close to being very, very good and very competitive. But we can’t defend set pieces in the second phase like we did today.”
