Poultry house destroyed in storms Tuesday in LaGrange County

An EF1 tornado hit LaGrange County Tuesday evening.

Cleanup operations are underway across the region after winds of over 90 mph swept through the county, leaving a trail of devastation.

Two people were injured in the storm on Tuesday.

Sheet metal and other debris could be seen in the fields and trees.

In addition, a poultry house was destroyed.

According to the LaGrange County Department of Emergency Management, two people were injured in the storm.

They were injured when their buggy overturned.

Officials said they suffered minor injuries and were treated at a hospital.

A lot of metal debris was collected and the broken wood of a chicken coop was burned.

The community responded very quickly to the aftermath of Tuesday evening’s tornado.

According to official reports, the damage is extensive.

“From the damage that we’ve identified, I would say it’s 4 to 5 miles. There have been other sightings of possible funnel clouds coming down throughout the county, extending throughout the county, but we haven’t identified any damage or anything like that, so I can’t say for sure if that’s what happened,” said Bill Morr, LaGrange County Emergency Management Director.

Morr also urged caution when traveling through the storm’s damage zone.

“If you are travelling in this area, please be careful. There are a lot of people working in this area and on the roads. There is not a lot of traffic. There is probably more traffic there today than in the last few years combined. So I ask everyone to be careful,” said Morr.

The owner of a damaged poultry house said he saw a tornado.

“We had a tornado that came out of the woods. We saw the cloud on the ground and it rolled around and came right up to the barn. It went to the side of the barn,” said Mervin Bontrager, owner of the poultry barn.

Currently, the National Weather Service has not provided any information as to whether this damage was caused by a tornado or not.

Their survey was completed early Wednesday.
