Potential Tropical Cyclone 5 develops near the Lesser Antilles

A tropical wave in the Central Atlantic developed into a potential tropical cyclone (PTC 5) on Sunday afternoon, but the system will move away from Florida and possibly the entire United States.

According to the National Hurricane Center, PTC 5 was located about 950 miles east-southeast of Antigua and moving west-northwest at 21 mph. The system had maximum sustained winds of 30 mph with stronger gusts.

The disturbance is forecast to move across parts of the Leeward Islands on Tuesday and approach the U.S. and British Virgin Islands on Tuesday evening.

Chief Meteorologist Denis Phillips said the system could “further approach Bermuda” from 5 p.m. Sunday.

The system is expected to develop into a tropical storm by Monday evening.

If the system evolves into a named system, it will be named Ernesto.

As hurricane season progresses, remember Phillips’ Rule No. 7: Don’t panic.
