Possible tornado spotted in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – A possible tornado was caught on camera in Charlotte Thursday morning.

Jacob Sprankle, who shared the video on X, spotted the funnel cloud on September 26 in the Steele Creek district.

The National Weather Service (Greenville-Spartanburg) responded to Sprikle in a comment, asking if they had seen any damage at the location where the possible tornado occurred.

Sprankle replied, “Nothing found so far.”

The possible tornado/funnel cloud will form just hours before Hurricane Helene is expected to reach Florida and eventually move north toward the Carolinas.

Helene’s main effects

Rainfall amounts of 6 to 12 inches are possible in the mountains and foothills of Helene, in addition to any rain that fell prior to the storm. This has created an increased risk of flooding in the area, for which a flood warning remains in effect.

The greater Charlotte area is expected to receive 2 to 4 inches of rain, leading to localized flash flooding. Lighter amounts are forecast for the Sandhills.

Wind gusts could reach at least 50 mph in all areas along and west of Interstate 77, downing trees and causing isolated to numerous power outages. The strongest winds are expected locally Friday morning. East of I-77, gusts could reach 40 mph.

We also need to be aware of the risk of tropical tornadoes as the center of circulation passes to the west of us.

By Friday afternoon and certainly by the weekend, Helene will have moved away and drier weather will set in. The weekend will see highs of around 27 degrees with more sunshine and less chance of rain.
