Possible new ferry service could improve travel between Hawaii’s islands

The beauty of Hawaii lies in its islands. Each is different and has a different vibe and culture. However, getting to and from these islands can sometimes be a problem for locals and tourists.

Some government officials want to change this.

Hawaii is currently considering establishing a ferry service connecting Maui, Molokai and Lanai. There are currently connections between the islands by plane, but a ferry would probably be cheaper and not tied to such a strict schedule as the airlines.

There is a ferry service, but it only connects two of the islands and is making losses because of the forest fires. The planned ferry service promises greater accessibility.

“The ferry is a lifeline for Lanai City residents,” said Lanai Councilman Gabe Johnson. “Many of us travel to access essential medical and professional services not available on Lanai, or to purchase groceries and essential goods that are much cheaper.”

He says the ferry is also crucial because it connects students to the public school system.

One concern: could there be overtourism, which has long been a problem in Europe? In a country that is heavily dependent on tourism and whose holiday rental market has collapsed, this is a sensitive issue.

A feasibility study has been proposed and Maui County is considering purchasing and expanding the existing ferry service.

“If the county purchases (the existing service), we will have all the necessary permits and vessels that have proven reliable in the sea channels. It will also allow us to apply for federal grants and purchase more ferries, modernize our ports and even electrify our fleet,” Johnson said.

Molokai residents say a ferry would provide them with more job opportunities, better medical appointments and shopping, but people are concerned about the potential impact of tourism.

“We need to prioritize our local, essential travel,” said Zhan Lindo, a Molokai resident. “It doesn’t do us any good if it’s overwhelmed by non-essential travelers.”
