Philadelphia native Frankie Beverly, the legendary R&B singer and founder of the soul band Maze, died on September 10 at the age of 77, according to a statement from his family.

Beverly’s career spanned more than 60 years, during which he helped shape soul, funk and hip-hop and influenced several generations of artists.

He and Maze were very productive in the 70s, 80s and 90s, releasing nine gold records, including hits such as “Joy and Pain”, “Before I Let Go”, “Happy Feelings” and “We are One”.

Maze’s 1981 album Live in New Orleans, recorded at the historic Saenger Theater, is considered one of the best live albums of all time and has been synonymous with black barbecues and family reunions for generations. A love letter to New Orleans, the city welcomed Beverly and Maze with open arms and they became staples of Essence Fest and Jazz Fest for decades.

Beverly’s death comes just months after he announced his retirement with one final farewell tour. With special guests The O’Jays and The Whispers, Frankie Beverly graced New Orleans with one final sold-out show at the Smoothie King Center in May. Nearly 14,000 attendees wore all-white outfits to honor the singer’s signature look as he retires.
