Politics in the workplace? Navigate the discussion like a champion

This paid post is sponsored by Avera Health.

Do political discussions occur in your workplace? These conversations are likely to increase in the coming months as the presidential election approaches. It’s important to know how to handle the topic of politics or avoid it altogether.

According to the vault.com survey, 66 percent of respondents said their coworkers discuss politics at work, and 46 percent have witnessed a political argument in the office.

Passionate political debates can escalate into personal conflicts and create negative feelings among colleagues. While political discussions in the workplace are inevitable to some extent, such conversations can often lead to unnecessary or heated arguments.

The Avera Employee Assistance Program team offers advice on how to navigate these situations over the next few months. Avera EAP works with employers to provide employees with confidential support for personal and work-related issues. It can be a valuable resource if your company offers this benefit.

Appropriateness: When and how

The best practice is for employees to avoid political discussions of any kind during normal business operations. Such discussions can be distracting and potentially upset colleagues and customers.

Here are some guidelines to help you avoid negative situations when expressing your political views:

  • Think about your fellow human beings.

While a lively political discussion may be the perfect way for you to spend your lunch break, others may not share your enthusiasm for politics.

  • Before engaging in a political conversation, ask yourself the following questions:
  1. Would you be comfortable having a political discussion with me?
  2. Do you mind if I talk about politics? If you answer “no” to any of the questions, don’t continue.
  • Remember that others may have feelings just as strong as yours.

Everyone has a reason for their beliefs. Bullying or harassing others until they share your point of view is inappropriate behavior and is likely to cause conflict, workplace disruption, and resentment. You don’t have to agree, but respect the rights of others who have a different opinion than you.

People of good faith can disagree on all issues. Never let political disagreements become personal. The potential damage to a relationship is not worth it.

If you are uncomfortable discussing politics in your workplace, express your feelings and politely explain that you wish to avoid political discussions in the office.

These tips apply to many difficult conversations you have with colleagues. In many situations, it can be helpful to be aware that people may have different views or opinions.
