Politico reporter Ryan Lizza announced that he would no longer cover Robert F. Kennedy Jr. because his former fiancée Olivia Nuzzi allegedly had a “personal relationship” with the 2024 presidential candidate.

In Friday’s Politico Playbook, Lizza said, “Because of my connection to this story through my ex-fiancée, my editors and I have agreed that I will not participate in any coverage of Kennedy in the Playbook or elsewhere at POLITICO.”

Lizza and Nuzzi became engaged in 2022 but split sometime earlier this year, according to the New York Post.

Politico’s announcement came shortly after Nuzzi, a star reporter for New York Magazine, was placed on leave by her employer over her alleged relationship with Kennedy.

The magazine issued a statement Thursday evening saying that Nuzzi had revealed to them that she had “a personal relationship” with a “former individual relevant to the 2024 campaign.” Media blog Status reported that the person was Kennedy.

Nuzzi, the magazine’s Washington correspondent, has given several high-profile interviews as part of her coverage of the presidential election, including Kennedy, whom she wrote a post End of last year.

Nuzzi published a statement On Thursday evening, she said she never had a physical relationship with her former reporter, but had “personal” communication. She did not mention Kennedy’s name.

“Earlier this year, communications between me and a former reporting officer became personal,” she said. “I did not report directly on the individual nor use him or her as a source. The relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to avoid the appearance of a conflict. I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I disappointed, especially my colleagues in New York.”

A spokesman for Kennedy also denied that there had ever been a physical relationship between the two.
