Police search for shooter after seven injured in Kentucky highway shooting | Gun violence news

Authorities are searching for a man suspected of shooting at cars traveling on a rural stretch of I-75.

Police in the southern US state of Kentucky are searching for the shooter after up to seven people were injured on a rural section of a major highway.

They were traveling on this road not far from London shortly before 6 p.m. (10:00 GMT), the city’s mayor, Randall Weddle, said on Facebook.

Kentucky State Police spokesman Scottie Pennington said earlier that between four and six people were injured.

Local news station WYMT reported there were “several serious injuries” but no confirmed deaths.

The shooting led to the temporary closure of Interstate 75, a major north-south highway that crosses the eastern half of the United States, in both directions.

Authorities said they were searching for 32-year-old Joseph Couch in rough terrain near the highway. Local media reported the shots were fired from a wooded area or an overpass.

“Consider him armed and dangerous,” the sheriff’s office said of Couch in a Facebook post. “Do not attempt to approach.”

The incident occurred a few days after two students and two teachers were killed in a shooting at a school in Georgia.

A 14-year-old boy was charged with murder in connection with the attack, while his father, who allegedly gave him the gun, was charged with manslaughter and premeditated murder.

Gun violence is widespread in the United States, a country where there are more firearms than people.
