Police investigate reported threats in schools

UPDATE: A post circulating on Snapchat threatens that something bad could happen at Knox County Schools on September 11.

Officers quickly identified the student who made the threat and took him into custody.

Letcher County High School is investigating after a possible threat was overheard at another school. Security officials at both schools quickly investigated the threat and concluded there was no threat.

Law enforcement asks that you contact officers directly if you hear or see a potential threat.

UPDATE: ROWAN COUNTY, Kentucky (WYMT) – A precautionary curfew began at several schools in Rowan County around 11:00 a.m.

The following schools were closed:

  • McBrayer Elementary School
  • Rowan County Preschool
  • Rowan County Middle School
  • Rowan County High School

During this curfew, classes continued as usual, but the school building was secured and all exterior doors were locked. During a soft curfew, law enforcement also monitors the campus. No one is allowed to enter or leave campus during this time.

The reason for the security precaution is a reported incident that the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office believes is related to the ROTC training incident on September 9th.

At around 12:10 p.m., the Rowan Sheriff’s Department gave the all-clear.

EASTERN KENTUCKY AND SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA (WYMT) – Police are investigating several threats made against mountain schools.

Officials with the Wise County Sheriff’s Office were notified of possible threats made at a school Tuesday morning.

In a social media post, officials said investigators and school security officials were trying to gather information to confirm whether the threats were made and justified.

According to the post, one person was arrested in this case.

In a social media post, officials with the Knox County Sheriff’s Department announced that they were investigating threats against the school system on social media.

Floyd County Schools officials are also investigating a possible threat to a school site in their school district.

The school administration published a post about the situation on social media on Tuesday morning.
