Police are asking for help in finding videos of a gathering near Boston’s Franklin Park where 5 people were shot

BOSTON – Boston police are asking the public for help in finding video footage of a gathering where five people were shot near Boston’s Franklin Park on Sunday evening.

Five people shot at rally in Roxbury

According to police, the shooting occurred around 9 p.m. on Circuit Drive in Roxbury. The gathering followed a peaceful parade and festival celebrating Dominican Day.

The officers heard several shots from the crowd. “There were three men and two women,” said Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox.

All victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to local hospitals, police said. One of the victims was a young girl who was shot in the leg and required surgery.

“That’s the most important thing, and I know the murder numbers are low this year. I know people were hurt and it was a horrible recovery, but I’m thankful they’re alive,” said Roxbury neighbor Brian McFaddon.

But now police are turning to the public in the hope that someone has footage of the shooting or the suspects.

“If anyone has video footage or anything like that, we really need help in this case because we need to hold these people accountable,” Cox said.

Community asks for support

Alexandra Dorrelus lost her brother Louis in 1993 while on his way to a Teens Against Gang Violence Christmas party. He was caught in the crossfire between two groups shooting at each other.

“I was four when my brother was murdered,” Dorrelus said. She says Sunday night’s shooting is another reminder of the trauma families go through.

“Every time something like this happens again, we as a community are traumatized again. We thank God it is not life-threatening and we know the damage is done,” she said.

Alexandra works as co-executive director of the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute in Dorchester. She says the Peace Institute, named after her brother, provides support for people affected by trauma, murder, grief and loss. It ensures families have adequate resources and focuses heavily on the younger community known as Generation Peace.

“They’re beautifying their neighborhoods and having conversations about what they want to see in their community. And it’s our job to make sure families have the opportunity to talk about murder, trauma, grief and loss, so our festivals are about the celebration,” she said.
