Planned march near the VSFB Visitor Center

VANDENBERG SPACE FORCE BASE, Calif. — A planned demonstration will take place Saturday afternoon, potentially affecting traffic in the area, according to Vandenberg Space Force Base.

The planned march will take place “in front of the Santa Maria Gate” near the visitor center. In a Facebook post, VSFB said it will start at 12pm and end at 6pm.

According to the Catholic Worker Movement, the Los Angeles Catholic Worker and the Guadalupe Catholic Worker will participate in the planned march. Longtime activists Jeff Dietrich and Catherine Morris, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary, will “risk arrest to advocate for the abolition of nuclear weapons and protest violence in Gaza and Ukraine.”

According to the rules issued by the VSFB, protesters can be arrested if they cross a green line marked on the ground.

The Catholic Worker Movement was founded in the USA in 1933 by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin. The LA branch was founded in 1970 and later led by Detrich and Morris.

According to Angelus News, the Central Coast chapter of Guadalupe Catholic Worker was founded in 1996 by activists Dennis Apel and his wife Tensie Hernandez. Apel and Hernandez were arrested during protests against VSFB.

“The Santa Maria gate will be closed for the duration of the event,” VSFB said. “However, the Lompoc and Solvang gates will remain open for inbound and outbound traffic.”

Travelers on Highway 1 entering or leaving Lompoc should expect traffic delays due to the planned demonstration.

In the image above, VSFB shows the area highlighted in red that will be cordoned off and where protesters may be present.

However, the California Highway Patrol has set up detours marked in navy blue (northbound) and blue (southbound). Drivers on HWY 1 will be redirected to Mountainview Boulevard and Timber Lane.
