Democratic vice presidential candidate and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will speak in Asheville today, Tuesday, September 17.

On Monday, the website indicated that the event was sold out. There is again a registration section on the website, but the page reminds hopeful attendees that while registration for the event is required, it does not guarantee entry.

Here’s the latest we know about Walz’s performance in Asheville today.

When will Tim Walz speak in Asheville?

Doors to the event open at 3 p.m., but Walz is expected to arrive in Asheville at 4:30 p.m. after previous appearances in Macon and Atlanta, Georgia. That means he likely won’t speak until 5 p.m. or even later.

How to get tickets for the Walz Rally on September 17th

Registration for the event is available online. The event page also stated that any students who wish to join the student section should send an email to [email protected].

Road closures on Tuesday

Road closures are expected on I-26 from Asheville Regional Airport to the venue and back on September 17. Asheville Police Department representative Samantha Booth told the Citizen Times that the exact timing of the “rolling closures” will not be confirmed until closer to their occurrence.

The weather today

As predicted by the National Weather Service, Western North Carolina is expected to see plenty of precipitation today, with a total of 1-2 inches possible. However, forecasts show a lower chance of rain after 3 p.m., with showers and possibly thunderstorms between 3 and 5 p.m., and then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m.

Please also note that due to increased security measures, visitors are prohibited from bringing umbrellas of any size to the event.

Tim Walz Event Security

In an email from the Harris Walz campaign team, attendees were informed that all guests must pass a U.S. Secret Service security check before entering the event.

A valid, government-issued photo ID confirming your registration is required for entry. The following items are prohibited:

  • Liquids in any quantity, aerosols or gels. (Medical items are accepted.)
  • Bags larger than a clutch – please leave large bags in your car.
  • Posters or signs outdoors.
  • Umbrellas of all sizes.
  • Vape pens or lighters.
  • Knives, firearms, weapons or other dangerous objects
  • Any other items classified as dangerous by the United States Secret Service
