Pittsburgh Steelers receive update on Chargers QB Justin Herbert

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers are focused on the Los Angeles Chargers, but are unsure if one of their most important, if not the most important, part of their offense will be on the field.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert suffered a lower-body injury in Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers. Although he was able to return, he confirmed after the game that he would undergo further tests to find out exactly what happened.

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh is still evaluating Herbert’s status and, as the Steelers typically do, isn’t giving away too much information about the quarterback, but he did confirm that the team received good news ahead of Pittsburgh, as Herbert’s X-rays came back negative.

However, he also announced that there would be “further evaluations” during the week.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told Steelers OnSI that he is not paying particular attention to Herbert’s status at this early point in the week and that while he will monitor his participation, he does not consider it as such unless there is cause for concern.

“So far this week, I haven’t done that,” Tomlin said, checking on Herbert’s status. “I will. I don’t speculate or read anything on Tuesday, that’s a waste of time. Attendance, or lack thereof, is what gets my attention.”

If Herbert is unable to play, the Chargers will look to Easton Stick as their backup in Week 3. The 29-year-old is 0-4 as a starter, including all four losses last season with Los Angeles. He has thrown for 1,133 yards and three touchdowns with one interception and has completed 64% of his passes over the course of his career.

The Steelers allowed 246 passing yards to Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix last week. They also forced two interceptions, matching the two they threw in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons.
