Pittsburg introduces new waste disposal service for residents

PITTSBURG, Kansas – The City of Pittsburg is officially launching a new service for its residents.

“I think first and foremost we just want to make Pittsburg a clean city,” says Troy Graham, deputy director of property and sanitation for the city of Pittsburg.

Troy Graham, assistant director of property and waste management for the city of Pittsburg, says departments across the city have been picking up bulky waste and trash for years.

But now they are officially taking on this task.

“What we’re doing now is basically filling that gap, since we’ve been doing it anyway. And like I said, we’re just getting started and we’re excited to serve the citizens,” Graham said.

Initially, services will be offered only to residents within the city limits of Pittsburg.

Graham says so far 800 residents have signed up for the city’s solid waste pickup.

“We’ve had a few problems over the last few years. But now, you know, we’re going out and seeing that people are getting really positive feedback from the citizens and that they’re looking forward to it,” Graham said.

This week, the city received its first truck for this service and is now awaiting the delivery of another one as well as carts to drive around the city.

“We will contact the customers who have already signed up and begin delivering the carts, dumpsters and so on. We will also let them know what day of the week they will be picked up,” Graham said.

Trucks will be on the streets over the next few weeks as the city prepares for implementation.

“We map out our route. We do all our internal training and plan everything. And like I said, where we need to go, what days of the week,” Graham said.

The service is expected to be operational by September 2, something that Graham said Pittsburg residents have been waiting for a long time.

“We want to make sure that when people visit us, they see a bright Pittsburg, and we want the people who live here and have lived here for many years to be proud of Pittsburg and just see what we’re doing as we move forward,” Graham said.
