Pickleball courts coming to Olsen Park near Wilmington, NC

Pickleball fans in northern New Hanover County may soon have a new place to play.

According to a request for proposals from the City of Wilmington, there are plans to add four pickleball courts to Olsen Park. The project, known as Olsen Park Phase II, would also add a multi-purpose field, asphalt path and parking.

The project plans also include several alternatives that could include four additional pickleball courts, an additional multi-purpose field, converting the existing roundabout to a three-stop sign roundabout, and an additional asphalt path and conduit system for future lighting in the park, according to the ad.

The pickleball courts would be built adjacent to the existing Court No. 5, according to site plans provided by the city. The multi-purpose courts would be approximately the size of a standard soccer field. In addition, the proposed eight-foot-wide asphalt path would encircle part of the park property.

According to construction plans, a black, vinyl-coated chain link fence 4 feet tall would surround the multi-purpose fields. Pickleball courts would also be surrounded by a chain link fence with three sides 4 feet tall and one side reaching 12 feet tall.

Olsen Park, located near Laney High School, is currently home to five lighted baseball and softball fields, a volleyball court and two picnic shelters, according to the city’s website. The site also includes Miracle Field, a special rubber turf field, and Kiwanis Miracle Playground, the largest accessible playground in the Southeast.

The property, located at 5510 Olsen Park Lane, is a joint project between the city of Wilmington and New Hanover County, according to the city’s website. Regional and state sports tournaments are regularly held at the park.

A pre-award conference for the project will be held at the Skyline Center on September 10 at 3 p.m., according to the announcement. All companies must submit their bids for the project by October 8 at 3 p.m.
