As the NHL prepares for its annual Stadium Series game at Ohio Stadium in March, the league has released a logo that pays tribute to the Buckeyes.

The logo for the game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Columbus Blue Jackets was unveiled on Thursday.

Rumors of an NHL game at Ohio Stadium date back to November 2022, when Aaron Portzline of The Athletic noted that league and Blue Jackets officials met with stadium officials.

Before the league announced that the stadium would host the Stadium Series, Ohio State officials told the Columbus Shipping in January it was announced that it would need to be winterized. The process involves installing a heat tracing system, which involves wrapping the pipes with electrical cables that can raise their temperature. The estimated cost of this is about $8 million.

On February 17, the NHL officially announced that the Red Wings and Blue Jackets will face each other in the 2025 Stadium Series. The opponent was specifically chosen because of the legendary college football rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State.

This will be the fifth outdoor game for the Red Wings. They have a 2-0-2 record in their last four games at an outdoor stadium. The Blue Jackets have never played an outdoor game in their 24-year franchise history.

Ohio Stadium has a capacity of 102,780 fans. That would be the second-highest attendance ever for an NHL game. Only the 105,491 fans at the 2014 Winter Classic between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Red Wings at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor were higher.
